Nigeria’s Population Now 223.8m, Report Says

The current population of Nigeria is 223.8 million. This is according to a 2023 report recently released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

This means the country’s population has witnessed an increase by over seven million people when compared to the 216.1 million that was recorded in 2022.

The latest figure also means that Nigeria now accounts for 2.78 percent of the entire world’s population, which currently stands at 8 billion.

From the report, Nigeria is now the sixth most populous country in the world, trailing India, China, United States of America, Indonesia and Pakistan.

The country’s population density now also stands at 246 people per square kilometre of land area (246 P/Km²).

Urban population now stands at 120.7 million, and this means an increase of over 4 million when compared to the 116 million that was recorded in 2022. The figure also represents 53.9 percent of the country’s entire population.

As of 1960, the year Nigeria became independent, her population was a little below 45 million.
